What Is FFMI?
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) measures how much muscle mass you carry relative to your height. Unlike BMI, which only looks at total body weight, FFMI isolates your lean tissue — muscle, bone, and organs — after subtracting body fat. It was developed as a research tool to study natural muscular development and has since become a common reference point in bodybuilding and strength training circles [1].
FFMI Formula
The normalization step adjusts for height, since taller people naturally carry more fat-free mass without necessarily being more muscular. This makes Normalized FFMI comparable across different heights.
FFMI Interpretation
Natural FFMI ranges differ meaningfully between men and women, so use the table that matches you.
FFMI Scale for Men
| Normalized FFMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Below average muscle mass |
| 18 – 20 | Average |
| 20 – 22 | Above average |
| 22 – 23 | Excellent — near the natural ceiling for most lifters |
| 23 – 26 | Superior — rare, takes years of dedicated training |
| 26+ | Statistically outside the drug-free range |
FFMI Scale for Women
Women naturally carry less fat-free mass than men at the same height, so the natural range sits lower across every category.
| Normalized FFMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 14 | Below average muscle mass |
| 14 – 16 | Average |
| 16 – 18 | Above average |
| 18 – 19 | Excellent — near the natural ceiling for most female lifters |
| 19 – 21 | Superior — rare, takes years of dedicated training |
| 21+ | Statistically outside the drug-free range |
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your height and weight (switch between Imperial and Metric with the toggle), then enter your body fat percentage — measured with a skinfold caliper if you want a repeatable number rather than a rough visual estimate. Your Fat-Free Mass, FFMI, and Normalized FFMI update instantly, along with where you land on the natural range.
FFMI is most useful as a way to track your own progress over time rather than a one-time score. If you're actively building muscle, see our guide on muscle hypertrophy and the difference between myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, or use Oneizar's Body Recomposition Calculator to set the calorie and protein targets that support muscle growth.
